Sydney film festival set to wow fans

Film buffs are closing in on the upcoming Sydney Film Festival.

The annual event will return to the Australian cultural hub from June 5th. Started in 1954, filmgoers have been enjoying a selection of top-quality movies for 60 years.

Over 12 days the festival will screen feature films, documentaries, short films and animations in venues all over the city. Bringing together all forms of culture, there will also be free exhibitions, talks, panels, parties and live music.

This year's Official Competition will be judged by a panel of five led by Hugo Weaving, star of Lord of the Rings and The Matrix. Festival guidelines said that entries must have 'emotional power' as well as 'cutting-edge' and 'courageous' - a difficult feat by any standard.

On the nomination list are 12 feature films all vying for the title of festival winner and the prize money of $60,000 (£38,000). The final line-up includes: Only God Forgives - featuring Ryan Gosling - and The Rocket, the only Australian film to feature in the selection.

The Rocket, directed by Kim Mordaun, is a coming of age story set in Laos. It has already won major awards in the Berlinale and Tribeca festivals and looks set to top the list at the Sydney Official Competition.

Movie stars are no strangers to Sydney with film playing a big part in Aussie life.

The recent release of The Great Gatsby was met with much hype from the Australian media. On May 21st the glitzy premiere in Sydney was attended by homespun director, Baz Luhrmann.

The Moulin-Rouge creator told ABC News that Australia was a "filmmaking paradise": we couldn't agree more!

Earlier this year, Sydney Film Festival director, Nashen Moodley said: "These are some of the best productions from all over the world that we have in store for you". Film fans definitely can't wait to set their eyes on the silver screen this year.

If you can't get enough of the cinema and are looking for things to do in Sydney, then this should be top of your list.
