Lagos 'an essential stop' on Nigeria holidays

Lagos has been described as an "essential" place to visit on any holiday in Nigeria by one travel writer.

Author for Bradt holiday guides Lizzie Williams explained that spending time in the urban hub is a great way to get a better understanding of the country as a whole.

"Because Nigeria is characterised by its mammoth cities, the chaos and vibrancy of Lagos really has to be seen to be believed," she enthused.

Ms Williams added that every metropolis in the nation has its own character, so it is good to fully explore Lagos before moving on elsewhere as it provides a nice contrast.

Travellers jetting off on cheap flights to Lagos may want to visit other urban areas, such as Abuja or the Hausa cities in the north of the country.

She described the former as "much more staid" in comparison to Lagos, while the built up areas in the north where the Hausa ethnic group live are predominantly Muslim and different again.

Approximately 50 per cent of the Nigerian people follow Islam, while Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups make up around 29 per cent of the population, according to the CIA World Fact Book.
