Air Canada reveals passenger increases in September

Published on: 06 October 2011
Air Canada reports strong passenger figures

More people appeared to be opting to take cheap flights to Toronto and other Canadian destinations last month, as the country's number one airline announced a rise in passenger numbers.

Bosses at Air Canada have revealed record uptake of flights for September, as services were found to be 82.8 per cent full.

This was an improvement on statistics from 2010, when the carrier saw 82.2 per cent of its planes filled to capacity.

The results also factor in the performance of smaller regional airlines that Air Canada dealt with during the course of the month.

"Air Canada generated system-wide traffic growth of 3.8 per cent on a capacity increase of three per cent through higher utilisation of our existing fleet," commented the firm's president and chief executive officer Calin Rovinescu.

This was the third consecutive month that the airline posted record growth when compared to performances in previous years.

However, the ratio of passengers to maximum capacity was actually down in September when put up against figures from the preceding month.

August saw Air Canada fill 87.8 per cent of its planes, which was a one per cent improvement on the corresponding month in 2010.

Despite the dip, Mr Rovinescu was delighted with the numbers and he reserved praise for the organisation's staff.

"I thank our employees for their commitment to taking care of our customers and for safely transporting them to their destinations," he added.

Earlier this week, a study conducted by Ranstad Canada showed that the airline was highly thought of among jobseekers in the country.

Having polled 7,000 people, it concluded that Air Canada was the fourth most desirable business to work for.

It finished behind BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion, IBM Canada and McGill University in the standings. Bombardier was deemed to be the fifth most revered employer.
