Minister speaks out about Heathrow queues

Minister speaks out about Heathrow queues

Lengthy queues at Heathrow Airport's immigration desks could damage Britain's reputation in a number of international destinations, minister Damian Green said yesterday (May 16th).

The official, who outlined plans to hire 70 additional staff members at the troubled travel hub, spoke out regarding the issue after operator BAA challenged the government and claimed delays at the facility's controls had worsened over the last two years.

He risked further ridicule when he told MPs the length of time non-European passengers waited to have their passports checked could be dependent on the direction the wind is blowing at that time.

However, in what could be good news for the airport, Mr Green revealed the 70 extra staff are set to be taken on by September to cover for immigration officers who are taking leave at the end of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The move comes after prime minister David Cameron urged politicians to take control of the disruption at Heathrow, as some travellers were forced to wait up to three hours before being admitted into the country.

Mr Cameron's spokesman yesterday claimed improvements to the airport's operations will take "some time", but assured critics resources would be found to cope with a surge of visitors due to the hosting of the international sporting event next month.

Ministers had originally planned to appoint additional employees in 2004 to coincide with the completion of building work on Heathrow's Terminal 2, with many of the appointments being brought forward to contend with the arrival of foreign students arriving in Britain for the new academic year.

"We have brought forward the first wave of recruitment for the reopening of Terminal 2 to give the border force even more flexibility to secure the border while dealing with record passenger numbers at Heathrow," Mr Green commented.

The official also called for better information on passenger numbers from airlines, stating there were three times more than expected at the London hub on Monday (May 14th) morning.
