Tourists urged to buy travel insurance

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has issued advice to tourists about the importance of taking out travel insurance.

Citing figures published earlier this month by Sainsbury's Finance, the organisation noted that the average cost of a medical claim made by British tourists abroad stood at £1,333.41 in 2010.

Phil Lord, from the Foreign Office's Know Before You Go campaign, said such research emphasises the necessity of arranging insurance.

"Many people try to cut holiday costs, only to discover that when things go wrong they are obliged to pay thousands of pounds in bills," he added.

Booking cheap flights to Manila or other destinations may be a better way of reducing the price of an overseas break.

According to Sainsbury's Travel Insurance, the US is the most expensive country in terms of healthcare for foreigners, while the most common reason for travellers to seek medical assistance is because of an ear infection.
