Citadel of Sigiriya – Lion Rock

One of the best things to do in Sri Lanka is to experience the culture, and citadel of Sigiriya also known as Lion Rock; it is the best place to start discovering the culture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds historical and archaeological value which attracts many travellers yearly. It is a massive area of rock that is nearly 660 ft high. It is believed that the King Kasyapa in 477-495 CE chose this area as his new capital; about halfway up the rock, you can find a little gateway which has been built like a lion as the entrance. Since the King died, the Citadel of Sigiriya became abandoned and since then has been one of the best preserved ancient planning.

Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple

Pidurangala Rock is a FREE observation deck that you seriously must add to your things to see in Sri Lanka. You can hike to the top of this rock and get absolutely stunning views of Sigiriya rock and its surroundings. Although the hike can be challenging at times, we would say it is good for an amateur climber. You can also walk through the cave where you’ll find some fascinating meditation bunks and other sculptures. Whether you’re on top or inside the Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple, it definitely will be an experience to remember.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is the famous Dambulla Cave Temple. It is right in the centre of the country so there should be no excuses as to why this shouldn’t be on your itinerary. It is one of the largest caves in Sri Lanka and one of the best preserved so you know that this cave has a lot of historic meaning to the locals. Prehistoric Sri Lankans lived in the cave as there are burial grounds surrounding the cave with skeletons dated 2700 years old! Be careful where you tread.

Lipton’s Seat

One of our top things to do in Sri Lanka is to take a seat on Lipton’s Seat. Once you’ve walked 5 km up the road, you’ll come across the most stunning view of World End. With a statue of Mr Lipton at the top, we know you’ll be taken back by how beautiful Sri Lanka is. There is also a yummy place to grab some tea so heading here for breakfast is an excellent choice. On the walk down you get to walk through plantations and local villages so you can really understand what every day is like for the Sri Lankans.
