San Francisco is a beautiful city with plenty of variety of things to do, however, everyone loves free activities. If you’re watching your budget or trying to figure what to do in San Francisco for free, we’ve got some recommendations on interesting and fun things to see and do. Whether you are wondering what to do if it is your first time in San Francisco or a returning visitor, you’ll definitely want to get stuck into these money-saving activities!

Golden Gate Bridge

One of the most iconic landmarks in San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, and it’s free to visit! You can walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge, and get some beautiful photos to show off to family and friends along your journey of the San Francisco skyline. The price is right and this activity is fun-filled… how could you say no to San Francisco flights now?

Try some of the finest red wines

You’d think wine tasting would cost you some money, nope! Take a trip to Fat Grape Winery which can be found on Treasure Island which offers a free tasting. Wednesday’s through to Sunday’s are the times to go to sample a fine selection of Patrick Bowen’s local red wines, that’s one free activity in San Francisco that will definitely make you wonder “why is this free?” Check out the winery here.

Cable Car Museum

There are many free museums in San Francisco, and we recommend checking out Cable Car Museum. As you might know, the city is known for its public transport being the cable car, so it’s only right to check out the history. You can find cable cars that are still functioning and are dated back to 1870s and famed cables that would pull tourists up and over the hills for some stunning views. It’s certainly an interesting activity to learn how much cable cars have developed over the years.

Art Galleries

If you have a keen art for nice art, San Francisco is the place to go. The city is overflowing with artists and with some beautiful artworks; it is one of the top free things to do in San Francisco. We recommend starting at San Francisco Art Dealers Association which is a gallery-packed four-floor artists dream. Find it here.

Fort Point

No matter where you go on holiday, it’s always nice to learn a bit about the history and how the city evolved. Fort Point was built in 1861 as a way to protect the city from Confederate attacks (that never happened). Not it’s a famous landmark where you can discover the history but also get a desirable view of the Golden Gate Bridge if you don’t feel like walking all that way.

Walking Tours

Walking tours are an excellent way of seeing some of the city that you might not have discovered on your own and one of the best things to do for free in San Francisco is go on one. Local volunteer-historians lead the tours on a daily basis which last one or two hours long which all range in theme and neighbourhood. There are plenty of options available and is an excellent free activity to do in San Francisco. Donations are accepted however not necessary. Check out the variety here.
